Russia has been a central power in modern chess through the Soviet era and after, producing world champions including Mikhail Botvinnik, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, and Vladimir Kramnik, and hosting major events such as the 2014 World Chess Championship match in Sochi.
