The first official world chess championship was held in 1886. Two players, Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort, competed for the title. They played in different cities in the United States – New York City, St. Louis, and New Orleans – from January 11 to March 29. The match began on January 11, 1886 in Cartier’s Hall, Fifth Avenue, in New York.
To win, a player had to win ten games. Steinitz was the first to reach ten wins, with a final score of 10-5. He also had five games that ended in a draw.
Note: There is nothing there to see related to chess. It is just a historical landmark.
