Today everyone knows the Carlsbad pawn structure, which mainly arises from the exchange variation in the Queen’s Gambit. This structure is named after a tournament in 1932 that took place in the “Helenenhof Imperal Hotel” in Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary). The 18 participants played from April 27 to May 22, 1923.
The tournament is one of the most famous tournaments in chess history. Alexander Alekhine showed great attacking chess and took the lead. But in the penultimate round he lost to Rudolf Spielmann and so Alekhine had to share the first place with Géza Maróczy and Efim Bogolyubov.
The hotel was built in 1910-1912 on the so-called “Helenen Hügel”. The architect was Ernest Hébrard (1875–1933). It was the first reinforced concrete building in Bohemia.
Built in neo-Renaissance style, the Hotel Imperial is now a luxury hotel and spa (205 rooms). Unfortunately, nothing remains of the chess tournament of that time, but it is still a historic place in chess history – where you can stay the night or at least have a coffee and try one of the excellent desserts. And there is a beautiful outdoor chess facility.
