SG Schwäbisch Gmünd 1872 e.V., established in 1872, is a historic and vibrant chess club located in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. It is the second oldest chess club in Württemberg and ranks 21st nationally by founding year. The club is actively engaged in competitive chess, with nine senior teams participating in regional championships. Its first team boasts a rich history, having competed in the Oberliga for over 30 seasons and in the Second Bundesliga during the 2004/05 season. The club hosts various tournaments, including the City Championship, monthly blitz and rapid events, and the prominent annual Staufer-Open. It also offers programs for youth and children, such as “Schach lernen” (learning chess). Visitors are welcome to join for casual games, with the main club night for adults on Fridays at 8:00 PM, and youth and children’s training starting at 5:15 PM on the same day.
