Cleveland is home to the world’s largest chess collection (as some people claim): Unique chess sets, rare writings, and famous chess players’ scorecards are all kept on the third floor of the Cleveland Public Library, in a space called the “special collections room.” This collection has been a part of the library since it first opened in 1925. The reason this collection is in Cleveland is thanks to John G. White, who was one of the people who helped start the library over a hundred years ago. White loved collecting chess items and had gathered one of the biggest private collections anyone had ever seen, which he then gave to the library.
